MACKS CREEK - Macks Creek completed the home portion of their Fall, welcoming in the Humansville Tigers on Tuesday night. At the end of the night the Pirates fell by the score of 8-4.
Macks Creek struck first with a run in the bottom of the third. With one out Grant English was hit-by-a-pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Preston Borgmeyer then drew a walk and both runners moved up on a balk. After a strikeout Ethan English hit a ball to short that was bobbled at second, allowing Grant to cross the plate. Borgmeyer was erased at third trying to advance after the bobble and Ethan reached first safely, thus allowing the run.
Humansville responded with two in the top of the fourth and did not relinquish the lead. They plated three in the sixth and then three more in the seventh for their eight.
Trailing in the bottom of the seventh the Pirates tried to mount a comeback. Olivier Sanchez pinch hit and was hit-by-a-pitch and Kyler Gabriel drew a walk. Grant English then hit a ball to right field. On the play Sanchez raced home and the relay throw was bobbled allowing him to score. Gabriel raced around second and drew a throw to third, which sailed into left field and allowed him to score. Grant was able to reach third on the play. Preston Borgmeyer was then beaned to put runners at first and third. Trever Smith followed with a single to right, plating Grant and moving Borgmeyer to second. Ethan English then hit a slow roller to short to advance both runners and bring Tyler Newcomb to the plate. He laced the first pitch he saw to short where it was snagged. A tag of Smith would complete the double-play and end the game.
"We were a little sluggish offensively and had chances before the seventh but were unable to get anything going," said Macks Creek Coach Jason Trusty, "in the seventh we were finally able to get runners on and across the plate and increase the pressure on them defensively."
"We showed a lot in the last half-inning and I'm hoping that will carry through the rest of the week."
Offensively for Macks Creek they were only able to collect three hits, but were able to draw a season-high six walks and were hit three times. Trever Smith went two-for-three, singling twice, walking once, and driving in a run. Grant English singled in a run, scored twice, and was hit-by-a-pitch. Preston Borgmeyer was beaned and walked, Hunter Harris walked, Keith Edelman walked twice, Olivier Sanchez was hit-by-a-pitch and scored as a pinch hitter, and Kyler Grabriel walked and scored. Ethan English was credited with reaching base on an error.
Grant English (0-4) worked the first six innings for Macks Creek on the mound while taking the loss. He was touched for five runs, one earned, on four hits, two walks, and fanned a season and career-high 16 batters. Dakota Willis relieved and worked the seventh, allowing three unearned runs on one hit while striking out one and walking one.
"Grant was phenomenal for us on the bump tonight," added Coach Trusty, "his last three outings he has really been a bulldog for us."
